MOSCOW, December 31 (RIA Novosti) - Russia called on political forces in Kenya on Monday to end violence that broke out after the disputed December 27 presidential election.

The violence has killed at least 34 people since Saturday across the east African state as armed police have been trying to contain protesters in Nairobi's slums, foreign media reported citing police and witnesses. The opposition said the vote was rigged. International monitors also questioned the polls.

"Moscow is following the developments in Kenya and hopes political forces in the country will show restraint and readiness to resolve problems in accordance with the Constitution," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

President Mwai Kibaki, 76, began his second term after being sworn in on Sunday within an hour after being announced winner.
