MAKHACHKALA, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - A parliamentary candidate was severely wounded in what appears to have been an assassination attempt in southern Russia on Wednesday night, a local police spokesman said.

Farid Babayev, the leader of the liberal Yabloko party in the Republic of Daghestan, sustained four gunshot wounds, including to the head.

Babayev was shot by unknown assailants at the entrance to his apartment block in Makhachkala, the capital of the North Caucasus republic.

Doctors said Babayev underwent surgery and is currently in intensive care.

Yabloko is running in the December 2 election to the State Duma.
