UNITED NATIONS, October 11 (RIA Novosti) - The preliminary results of a UN investigation confirm that Georgia was responsible for the September 20 incident in the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict zone, Russia's envoy to the UN said on Thursday.

"The first results of the investigation conducted by the UN mission in the conflict zone and published today, show that Georgia attacked Abkhazian military on the territory of Abkhazia, and two [Abkhazian] soldiers were shot at point-blank range," Vitaly Churkin said.

The diplomat said the results of the investigation are supported by DNA analysis and "are beyond reasonable doubt."

Abkhazia said on September 20 that a Georgian military group had entered the republic's territory, murdering two and abducting seven Abkhazian border guards.

However, Georgia said a raiding party from Abkhazia had attacked Georgian guards who were protecting a road being built in the Kodori Gorge, which lies in upper Abkhazia on the de facto border between Georgia and the breakaway republic.

Tbilisi later expressed its concern over the incident and accused Abkhazia of "armed provocation."

Mutual accusations of the violation of a ceasefire regime have been frequent from both Abkhazia and Georgia, whose President Mikheil Saakashvili has vowed to regain control of the region. Peace talks broke off when Tbilisi sent troops into Kodori in July and established a parallel Abkhaz administration there.

Georgia's self-proclaimed republic Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, sparking a bloody conflict in the region.

Churkin also said the UN Security Council would vote on October 15 on the extension of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) mandate, which expires on Monday.

He also said that he did not expect the results of Monday's vote [October 15] "to be dramatic" adding that "the extension has been agreed on, and we will see a good resolution. Russia has co-sponsored the resolution together with other members of the Secretary General's Group of Friends of Georgia."
