DAMASCUS, April 22 (RIA Novosti) - Voting began in Syria Sunday to elect a new 250-seat parliament.
According to the Syrian interior ministry, almost 38 candidates are running for each seat in the parliament, which is called the People's Council. Voting in the country of almost 19 million will also continue Monday.
The National Progressive Front that includes the ruling Baath Party and the country's nine other leading political parties is expected to win a majority of seats in the new parliament while candidates running independently will compete for the remaining seats in the parliamentary elections that are held every four years.
