WASHINGTON, April 19 (RIA Novosti) - The administration of Virginia Tech has warned that websites soliciting donations for victims of the shootings at the university on April 16 may be fraudulent.

"Recognizing the unprecedented outpouring of sympathy and goodwill from people worldwide, Virginia Tech has set up the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, the official place for donations," the university administration said in a statement. "As an alternative, donations can also be made to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army who have been onsite in Blacksburg aiding with relief efforts."

Virginia Tech also said the United Way of Montgomery, Radford, and Floyd was also collecting donations for funeral and burial costs, transportation costs, or other immediate costs online.

On Monday, the United States experienced its bloodiest mass shooting ever when an armed assailant killed 32 and wounded over 20 on the campus of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute before killing himself. The gunman, who killed over 30 people in Monday's rampage, was eventually identified as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a Virginia Tech student originally from South Korea.
