BRUSSELS, March 9 (RIA Novosti) - The leaders of 27 EU member countries have approved the European Commission's proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020, on the close of a two-day summit in Brussels Friday, summit reports read.

The European Commission said unless effective measures are taken the global CO2 emissions will increase 55% by 2030, greenhouse gases will account for 75% of this figure. The EU's contribution to the emissions will be 5%.

EU executives believe that greenhouse gas emissions should be halved in developed economies by 2050 to prevent global warming rising more than 2%, experts say.

Under the Kyoto protocol, EU member countries committed themselves to an 8% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2012.
