Russia plays an important role in the Middle East, and its unbiased position on the key problems enjoys the trust of regional countries, the Arab League secretary general said Saturday.
CAIRO, February 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia plays an important role in the Middle East, and its unbiased position on the key problems enjoys the trust of regional countries, the Arab League secretary general said Saturday.

"Russia plays an important role in the region as it is perfectly aware of the peculiarities of the current situation, and holds, unlike others, an unbiased position," Amr Moussa told RIA Novosti shortly before his forthcoming visit to Moscow.

Moussa, who will arrive in Russia on a three-day official visit Monday, said the Arab world has special friendly feelings for Russia.

He said "serious efforts" are needed to settle the situation in the Middle East's many hot spots, and urged more active efforts on the part of the Quartet of Mediators.

"Unless serious efforts are made to settle the Arab-Israeli conflict, establish an independent Palestinian state and resolve the problems of Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees, it will be hard for the Middle East region to achieve security," Moussa said.

He also said the situation in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian National Authority, as well as the nuclear security issue, will be discussed at the Moscow talks.

Russia's foreign minister, who attended the meeting of the Quartet of Middle East mediators comprising the UN, Russia, the EU and the U.S. in Washington Friday, said Saturday the establishment of a permanent mechanism on economic and political contribution to the Middle East crisis settlement will bring the quartet's work to a new level.

He said a statement, adopted by the Quartet Friday, contains the expediency of creating an international support mechanism.

Lavrov said Friday the statement fully reflects Russia's position.

The statement of the quartet voiced deep concern over the latest surge of violence in the Gaza Strip, which left more than 20 Palestinians dead and over 200 wounded since shooting began between gunmen of Hamas opposition Fatah.

The Russian minister said the statement "confirms all the fundamental principles on which we are striving to achieve a long-term, stable, comprehensive settlement to the Middle East conflict."

The radical Islamic group Hamas, which is still considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the U.S. and the EU, gained a majority in the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) after defeating President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction in polls a year ago.
