Russian FM Lavrov says Iran nuclear talks could resume

Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday there was every chance for a resumption of talks on the Iranian nuclear problem to be held on terms acceptable for all parties.
MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday there was every chance for a resumption of talks on the Iranian nuclear problem to be held on terms acceptable for all parties.

Iran has been at the center of an international dispute this year over its controversial nuclear programs. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's watchdog, have been at the center of efforts to resolve the problem.

"There is every chance that agreement can be reached on terms that would be acceptable for the Iran-6, the IAEA, the UN Security Council and Iran, of course," Sergei Lavrov said.

He said the parties should focus on the main goal of reaching a compromise, which would both ensure the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and allow Iran maintain the legitimate right to peaceful nuclear technologies.

The five permanent UN Security Council members - Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France and the United States - and Germany drafted a package of incentives to persuade Iran to suspend work on enriching uranium, which could be used in both electricity generation and weapons production. Tehran's response to these incentives was handed to the Iran-6 group August 22. According to media reports, Iran claims it will consider suspending its uranium enrichment program only after talks.

Some countries proposed drafting sanctions against Iran in the event the talks fail. But Lavrov said chance should be taken to start talks and not measures that could only obstruct progress.
