MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - The UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon offers an opportunity for a political settlement of the Israeli-Lebanese conflict, the Russian president said Saturday.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hizbollah and demands the withdrawal of Israel troops from south Lebanon.
"Putin noted that the unanimous adoption of the resolution by all 15 members of the UN Security Council offers a chance for a political settlement, which is the only reasonable alternative to the mounting military-political confrontation," the Kremlin press service quoted the Russian president as saying.
Putin said it was essential to implement the UN resolution as soon as possible.
