World Bank grants $15 mln to Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, July 8 (RIA Novosti) - The board of directors of the World Bank has approved a grant to the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan totaling $15 million, a bank official said Saturday.

The main purpose of the grant is to support the reforms of the government and reduce poverty in the Central Asian state, the official said. The funds would be allocated on the development of the private sector of economy, reforms of state structures and improvement of government and commercial services.

Tajikistan became a member of the World Bank in 1993. The inrenational financial organization has approved grants for 29 projects in the country since then, totaling $415 million.
