MOSCOW, July 2 (RIA Novosti) - A summit of the G-8 Group of industrialized nations scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg in July could discuss the situation in Iraq, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said Sunday.

"I do not rule out that the Iraq issue could be discussed because it is very serious for security in the region," Yakovenko said in an interview with Russia's 24-hour news channel Vesti.

Yakovenko said the Group of Eight foreign ministers' recent meeting in Moscow had discussed the situation in Iraq in the light of the murder of Russian diplomats in that country.

One Russian Embassy employee was shot dead in a June 3 attack in Baghdad and four others were kidnapped before being executed by an al-Qaeda linked cell.

"All the ministers denounced this barbaric act of terrorism and spoke for strengthening security in Iraq," Yakovenko said.
