MOSCOW, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - There are about six million drug users in Russia, the head of the Federal Drug Control Service said Tuesday.
Viktor Cherkesov said only about 400,000 drug addicts are officially registered, but "experts say the number of drug users in Russia is about six million people."
He said drug circulation remained high in Russia but that the rise in drug abuse had been curbed, largely due to law enforcement efforts.
"Last year the Federal Drug Control Service eliminated over 600 criminal organized groups dealing drugs," Cherkesov said.
He added that these measures are substantially improving the drugs situation.
"Data from the Health and Social Development Ministry proves that the growth trend of drug consumption has been practically stopped," Cherkesov said.
