Georgia denies Russian accusations over checkpoint blockade

TBILISI, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia Tuesday denied Russian allegations that Georgian police had interfered in the rotation of a peacekeeping contingent in the conflict zone with breakaway South Ossetia.

"The accusations against Georgian police regarding a blockade of checkpoints set up by peacekeepers are groundless," the ministry said in a statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Tuesday condemning the May 27 deployment of Georgian troops in the conflict zone who blocked checkpoints manned by Russian peacekeepers.

"We believe that the incident was caused by [Russia's] failure to comply with the decisions adopted by the Joint Control Commission charged with resolving the conflict," the Georgian ministry said.
