Ukrainian fisherman nets chilling piranha catch - paper

KIEV, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - A fisherman in eastern Ukraine may have been excused for thinking he was in South America recently, when his catch revealed glittering teeth of flesh-stripping fish usually found in the Amazon, a daily said Wednesday.

Segodnya said local biologists quickly took interest in the incident and themselves headed to the lake where they caught three piranhas, 10-15 cm long.

Igor Ushakovsky, an expert with the biology research center of Dnipropetrovsk National University, said only a few of the 15 types of Amazon piranhas were dangerous for humans and other living creatures, but Lake Kasyanka contained exactly the dangerous type that would make James Bond fans remember with a shiver or two.

Experts said the fish, usually confined to aquariums in the West, had only appeared in the lake recently and were feeling quite comfortable, but added that freezing winter temperatures might "break their teeth."

The scientists suggested somebody might have decided to play a joke and bought the rare creatures in a local pet shop for $50 each before releasing them into the lake.

However, local fishermen are not laughing, according to the paper, as they have noticed that the lake's fish stock has already fallen and frogs have almost become extinct species.
