MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - The former president of Kyrgyzstan said Monday that the detention of his daughter was premeditated and politically motivated.

"The arrest of my daughter on the border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan shows that all members of my family are permanently being followed," Askar Akayev said. "This is a premeditated political act."

Akayev said his daughter, Bernet Akayeva, had been detained six hours ago, adding that Maxim Maximovich, a family lawyer, had told him about the detention.

He said Bernet had been traveling to Kyrgyzstan to visit her relatives when security officers stopped her, saying she was driving a stolen car.

Akayev said his daughter's detention was aimed at him, as Bernet had been already cleared off all charges. He said the incident was "total lawlessness," and asked Russia to mediate.
