New earthquake hits Russian Far East

An earthquake of Richter magnitude 5.2 has been registered following a series of quakes in the northern part of the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East on Friday, seismologists said Saturday.

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, April 22 (RIA Novosti) - An earthquake of Richter magnitude 5.2 has been registered following a series of quakes in the northern part of the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East on Friday, seismologists said Saturday.

The latest quake struck Kamchatka's Koryak area at 8:21 p.m. local time (7:21 a.m. GMT), with an epicenter about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the town of Khailino at a depth of 60 km.

There are no reports of any injuries or damage.

The initial 7.8-magnitude quake, the strongest since 1900 in the Koryak area, which is eight time zones from Moscow, injured 31 people and damaged several buildings and facilities in the towns of Tilichiki, and Korf, and Ossora.

Rescuers plan to evacuate 600 people from the affected region by the end of the weekend.
