Russia to contribute 200 troops to UN Sudan mission

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday it was finalizing the technical details of sending military contingent to the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) comprising a helicopter group and up to 200 servicemen.

MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday it was finalizing the technical details of sending military contingent to the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) comprising a helicopter group and up to 200 servicemen.

"We are now coordinating practical aspects of contributing an armed contingent to the UNMIS: four Mi 8-MT (MTB) helicopters and up to 200 servicemen," a ministry news release said.

On March 24, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1663 extending the UNMIS mandate in the troubled North African country until September 24, 2006.
