MOSCOW, February 14 (RIA Novosti) - The project to create a Russian-Iranian joint venture to enrich uranium on Russian territory for the Islamic Republic's nuclear energy program needs additional work, the Iranian ambassador to Russia said Tuesday. Gholamreza Ansari said, "We believe that if experts mutually remove certain weak points of the project, then it will be a good project."

Russia's uranium enrichment offer has been seen as a compromise to allay international fears that Iran intends to produce nuclear weapons. Talks over Russia's offer, which were originally scheduled for Tuesday, have been postponed at Iran's request until February 20.

The ambassador said the Iranian leadership considered the joint-venture proposal a constructive one, and that he hoped the flaws in the plans could be tackled by February 20.

"The Iranian people are hoping [for this], including me," he said.

Iran and Russia maintain friendly bilateral relations, and neither side wants to impose its own conditions on the other, Gholamreza Ansari said.

Earlier Tuesday, Iran confirmed it had resumed uranium enrichment activities at underground facilities near the town of Natanz.
