MOSCOW, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - A shootout erupted between a militant group and police in the Stavropol Territory in southern Russia, which borders on the war-torn Chechen Republic, a local police source said Thursday.

"A militant group has barricaded itself in a residential building in the village of Tekui-Mekteb. The fighting started about 2 p.m. [11 a.m. GMT]," the source said.

There are three to six people in the house. They opened fire after police demanded that they surrender. A police officer was reported wounded, the source said.
