MOSCOW, February 6 (RIA Novosti) - Vladimir Putin has invited the prime minister designate of Canada to the G8 leaders' summit to be held in St. Petersburg during Russia's presidency of the club of rich nations, the Kremlin press service said Monday.

Stephen Harper, the head of the Conservative Party of Canada, will be sworn in as prime minister on Monday, taking over from Liberal Party leader Paul Martin.

The Russian president sent his congratulations to Harper on his election victory.

Putin said in his message, "Using this opportunity, I would like to invite you to attend the Group of Eight leaders' summit, which will be held in St. Petersburg from July 15 through 17 2006."

The president also said significant progress had been made in bilateral relations.

"Relations between our countries are developing dynamically in all areas. I would like to note that the solid foundation of Russian-Canadian cooperation was laid at the beginning of the 1990s in a large part thanks to the then leader of the Conservative Party, Brian Mulroney."

Putin said he hoped the new government would continue to support joint undertakings and projects begun under previous governments.
