ST. PETERSBURG, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is to put forward a range of education-focused initiatives at the G8 Summit in St. Petersburg in July, the deputy minister for education and science said Thursday.

The proposals would concentrate on improving the quality of professional education, providing high-quality school education, and developing programs to help immigrants adapt to their new home countries, Dmitry Livanov said.

Livanov was speaking at an education and global development workshop as part of the World Bank Economics Conference in St. Petersburg. Russia currently holds the rotating presidency of the G8 club of rich nations.

The initiatives would "make a significant contribution to improving the quality of the national education systems of different countries," he said.

The program for immigrants was "linked to demographic security" and "relevant for all developed countries," Livanov said.
