Below is a summary of the main security-related events in the North Caucasus on January 12, 2006

* Police said residents of the Shatoi district in southern Chechnya had discovered 141 artillery shells on a riverbank

* Police said an explosive device had detonated in a residential building in Makhachkala, the capital of Daghestan, but no one was hurt

* Chechnya's Interior Ministry said a suspected member of an illegal armed unit had been detained in the Shali district in the south of the republic

* Alexander Dzasokhov, ex-president of North Ossetia, arrived in the republic's Supreme Court to be questioned as an eyewitness on the Beslan school siege case. He said the terrorists had been ready to kill their own relatives

* The interior ministers of Ingushetia and Chechnya, Beslan Khamkhoyev and Ruslan Alkhanov, met to discuss reinforcing the administrative border between the two North Caucasus republics to prevent militants from crossing it
