MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - The United Kingdom expects Russia to produce stronger evidence of Chechen separatist envoy Akhmed Zakayev's guilt if it is to extradite him to Russia, British Ambassador to Russia Tony Brenton said Monday.

He said it was up to the British courts, not the government, to make a decision on extraditing Zakayev, who is wanted in Russia on suspicion of terrorist offences.

The British ambassador said the Russian authorities should also guarantee that Zakayev would be given a fair trial in Russia.

Moscow has repeatedly called on London to extradite Zakayev, who was granted political asylum in the United Kingdom in November 2003. The Russian authorities say that Zakayev, an envoy of separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, who was killed in March 2005, was involved in many terrorist attacks between 1996 and 1999.
