MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - The UN needs to take a stronger leading role in international issues, the speaker of the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, said Saturday.
Boris Gryzlov, speaking in Moscow after returning from the second international conference of parliamentary speakers in New York, said that UN reforms should give the organization greater international authority.
Gryzlov said that the UN General Assembly must adopt a comprehensive convention "including a definition of terrorism which would rule out the possibility of employing double standards in assessing acts of terrorists."
At the conference, which took place in the UN headquarters, the key role of parliaments in developing democracy and progress in the world, and future tasks for cooperation between the UN and national legislatures were discussed, Gryzlov said.
