BERLIN, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder adopted a joint statement on cooperation in the energy sector Thursday.

"The parties find it necessary to pursue a coordinated policy in the energy sector that would secure the continuity of supply, commercial viability and ecological cleanness," the document says.

The parties are making efforts to develop and use Russian natural gas resources and expand the necessary pipeline infrastructure.

The men hailed the decision of Russian and German enterprises to collaborate in the implementation of the North-European gas pipeline, which will complement and diversify the current network of pipelines.

The document says intensive cooperation in exploring and extracting, as well as in selling and processing, energy resources is advantageous for both parties.

Putin and Schroeder said improving framework conditions to intensify cooperation on a business level, including the use of opportunities envisaged by the Kyoto Protocol, was a common goal that could be reached with the help of the planned Russian-German energy forum.

"The reliable, viable and efficient supply of energy is one of the main conditions for stable global economic growth. The parties consider the summit of leading economic powers, which will be held under Russia's presidency in 2006, as a good opportunity to discuss a long-term strategy for global economic security within G8 framework," the statement says.
