MOSCOW/BISHKEK, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - Former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Nikolai Tanayev, under investigation on charges of abuse of office, has been re-arrested over an alleged recognizance violation, the Prosecutor General's Office reported Tuesday.

This report confirmed an earlier statement by his defense lawyer Maxim Maximovich, who said Tanayev had been apprehended at a border checkpoint as he was trying to cross into Kazakhstan for a one-day visit.

The Prosecutor General's Office issued its first warrant for Tanayev's arrest back in May. At that time, Kyrgyz authorities also asked for an international warrant, but Interpol turned the request down.

The former Kyrgyz prime minister was charged with issuing a government decree to divert $1 million to the bank account of a construction firm owned by his son.

During the March uprising in Kyrgyzstan, which eventually led to a change of government, Tanayev was away in Moscow, but he returned on August 22 to meet with investigators in connection with the criminal charges brought against him. He was then put in custody but soon released on recognizance.

"Everything I did I did for the sake of my country. I never violated the law, and I, therefore, do not consider myself guilty of abuse of office," Tanayev told RIA Novosti in a telephone interview from Bishkek in late August. "The parliament and law-enforcement agencies inspected the activity of the Cabinet and the Premier more than once, but did not find anything incriminating."
