Russia and Belarus step up efforts toward Union State

MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Belarus intend to intensify efforts to develop the Russian-Belarusian Union State, the Russian Foreign Ministry's press service said Thursday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met today with his Belarusian counterpart, Sergei Martynov, who is currently in Moscow on a scheduled visit.

The ministers' discussions focused on bilateral relations and an agreement to step up efforts toward establishing the Russia-Belarus Union State, including creating a common economic space, developing humanitarian cooperation and trade, and providing equal rights for Russian and Belarusian citizens, the ministry said.

The ministers also discussed bilateral political relations, including reforming the Commonwealth of Independent States and coordinating international and security issues.
