Kazan summit to help CIS reach new level of cooperation - Putin

KAZAN, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - The CIS summit in Kazan will allow the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to improve cooperation in all areas, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a news conference with his CIS leaders in Kazan Friday.

A set agreements on the legal and organizational basis of CIS security cooperation (primarily military) up until 2010, was signed.

Also signed at the summit were: a border policy agreement, documents on border cooperation and joint crisis resolution of external CIS borders, and joint measures against terrorism and illegal migration.

"It is in the shared interests of all CIS states to neutralize these threats," Putin said.

"Partnership in the military sphere, in counter-terrorism, and in the fight against international organized crime, is very important for the stability of CIS countries," he said. "It has a direct influence on CIS socio-economic prosperity."

Putin also said CIS leaders issued an address to the Commonwealth nations and the world community in connection with the 20th anniversary of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to remind them of the radiation security problem.
