KAZAN, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - An agreement on humanitarian cooperation proposed by Russia was signed at the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit in Kazan Friday.

"We strongly agree on common humanitarian values for countering extremism, intolerance, and terrorism," Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the opening of the summit.

"I am convinced that the signing of the humanitarian cooperation agreement will give us a necessary instrument for implementing new projects," he said. "We will thus be able to help develop the skills of our people, which all [CIS] countries recognize as the primary resource for modernization and economic growth."

The signing of a declaration on humanitarian cooperation at the informal CIS summit on the eve of VE Day in Moscow has helped accelerate this work, he added.

Putin also said it was necessary to boost cooperation culture and education.
