TASHKENT, August 19 (RIA Novosti) - Uzbek prosecutors are denying foreign press reports that Kyrgyzstan handed over four refugees, one of whom was tortured to death in Uzbekistan.

Svetlana Artykova, the senior spokeswoman for the Uzbek prosecutor's office, said Uzbek prosecutors had provided all the documents to the Kyrgyz authorities substantiating the extradition of those who committed serious crimes in Andijan in eastern Uzbekistan, close to the Kyrgyz border between May 12 and 13.

However, she said four of them returned to Uzbekistan on June 26 and turned themselves in to police, acknowledging their involvement in the Andijan unrests.

"All of them are accused of attacking the regional administration office, a military unit, causing unrest and shooting hostages and peaceful civilians, seizing cars and other crimes," Artykova said.

She said all the accused were being kept in custody until the investigation was completed.

The Uzbek authorities said a series of attacks were committed outside Andijan in the early hours of May 13, resulting in an official death toll of 176 people and 295 wounded. The Uzbek Foreign Ministry said 79 of the dead people and 62 of those injured were terrorists.

Journalist and human rights organizations have put the death toll much higher.
