According to police, the accident occurred on the Caucasus Federal Highway at 11:00 a.m., Moscow time.
The Dagestani Security Council said the car carrying Dagestani officials was hit head-on when a car drove into its lane.
An emergency room official said head of the Dagestani Management Department of the Republican State Council Ramazan Aliyev and First Vice-Prime Minister Nizami Kaziyev were hospitalized with serious injuries, while First Vice-Prime Minister Gitinomagomed Gadzhimagomedov sustained minor injuries.
The officials were returning here, to the capital of Dagestan, from the city of Izerbash where they had gone to express condolences to the relatives of Kamil Omarov, the city's road police chief, who was recently killed while pursuing a stolen car on the Caucasus Federal Highway. When he ordered the car to stop, two people got out of the car and opened fire. Another policeman was wounded in the incident.
