MOSCOW, July 27 (RIA Novosti) - Commander of the Russian Airborne Troops Colonel General Alexander Kolmakov gave high marks Wednesday to the Russian-German exercises conducted in July.

"Everything went as planned. Both sides learned positive lessons and shared experience," Kolmakov said.

But he said the final evaluation would be available after a thorough analysis of the exercises.

The active phase of the Russian-German tactical maneuvers took place near Pskov, a regional administrative center on the border with Estonia and Latvia.

Paratroopers from the Russian 76th Airborne Division and their German counterparts parachuted from AN-2 and IL-76 transport planes using new D-10 combat parachutes.

According to the tactical scenario, paratroopers repelled an attack of illegal armed groups and captured their base.

"The main goal of the exercises was combating illegal armed groups. In order to accomplish the set goals, paratroopers practiced operative compatibility of the units," Lieutenant-General Anatoly Mazurkevich, chief of the Main Department of International Military Cooperation of the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier.

The German part of the joint exercises was conducted last week near Zweibrucken, (Rheiland-Pfalz).

Participants practiced operative coordination and airborne tactics. The scenario provided for joint jumps in order to organize the evacuation of civilians from a combat zone or a natural-disaster zone.
