MOSCOW, July 22 (RIA Novosti) - The ancient Russian city of Yaroslavl has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release Friday.

At the 29th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Durban, South Africa on July 10-17 it was decided that the architectural monuments in Yaroslavl's historical center represent all the artistic styles seen in Russia in the last five centuries.

"In a relatively small area there are 140 monuments that are on the state protection list, and the same number again were revealed during studies," the ministry said.

The ministry said many ancient monuments contain murals which are unique examples of 16th-17th century monumental painting. "This makes Yaroslavl's historical center an outstanding example of continuity and progressive development in the creation of an exceptional cultural heritage," the ministry said.
