DUSHANBE/KHAMADONI, (Tajikistan), July 14 (RIA Novosti) - The flooding of the Pyandzh River in the Khamadoni and Farkhor districts in southern Tajikistan has resulted in $50 million worth of damages, the Tajik vice prime minister said Thursday.

The level of the Pyandzh River increased to two-four meters due to melting of glaciers. The river's channel increased from 200 meters to one kilometer.

"The natural disaster took away one life, destroyed 30 kilometers of dams, eight bridges, more than 400 houses, dozens of kilometers of communication and electrical lines," Vice Prime Minister Asadullo Gulomov said.

According to Tajik Emergencies Minister Mirzo Ziyev, about 8,000 people were evacuated. Most were taken to schools, hospitals and relatives, while 1,500 of them were placed in a temporary tent city.

"The government, with the help of the Emergencies Ministry, delivered 62 tons of foodstuffs for them," he said.

Providing those affected by the flood with necessities is the top priority for the government, said Sirodzhiddin Aslov, the Tajik deputy foreign minister.

"If the dam is not restored, the banks of the river will continue to sink in and all of the Khamadoni and Farkhor districts will be flooded," he said.

Aslov said that $30 million will be required to restore 30 kilometers of the dam and that outside assistance will be needed.
