Russia to draft proposals on European Convention

MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia intends to draft proposals for modernization of the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, Russian Justice Minister Yury Chaika said Thursday.

"An inter-agency working group is being set up to draw up proposals and send them to European counterparts," Chaika said, adding that the group was set up as a part of the European Committee on Crime Problems (CDPC), which studies European Council members' proposals on the issue.

"This will be a new mechanism of international cooperation, primarily on the struggle against terrorism," he said.

According to Chaika, one problem is that many countries have different legal systems, though they are members of the European Convention.

"There must be a single international mechanism and common approach to examining such matters and any kind of dispute."
