"I think this is interference in contract affairs of another state," Adamkus told journalists.
The Russian Justice Ministry asked the Lithuania and Dutch justice ministries on Wednesday to reveal the assets of Yukos' affiliates in Lithuania and prohibit any transactions with regard to the Yukos-owned 53.7% stake in Mazeikiu Nafta (MN) to make up for Yukos' tax debt.
Yukos' debt was some $11 billion in late 2004.
The company bought MN shares through Yukos International UK BV, registered in the Netherlands. Oil and gas companies like Lukoil, TNK-BP, ConocoPhillips, Gazprom, KazMunaiGaz and Vitol are seeking to acquire the shares.
Gintaras Svedas, the Lithuanian deputy justice minister, said Thursday that his ministry had received no official request from Russia to impound Yukos' property in Lithuania.
"The Lithuanian Justice Ministry does not have such rights."
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas said earlier that the request to prohibit transactions with MN shares "makes the situation fundamentally different" and could have a negative impact on the upcoming talks on the sale.
"If such a request was really made, it makes the situation different, and we should pay attention to it," he said Wednesday.
According to Brazaukas, given that the acquisition of shares was registered in the Netherlands, the decision will depend much on the nature of Russian-Dutch legal relations and agreements that bind the countries.
On Thursday, Brazauskas confirmed that the Lithuanian government had been unofficially notified about the Russian Justice Ministry's request.
