"Establishment and development of cooperation with Brunei in various spheres meets the interests of the Russian foreign policy in Asia. Both sides express the desire to increase the level of the political dialogue and expand cooperation in all spheres of mutual interest," he said.
According to Yakovenko, both sides focus on "the search of the ways to supplement political contacts with economic, investment, scientific and humanitarian cooperation, and to establish the necessary legal basis for such cooperation."
"Promising areas of cooperation have been identified. For instance, they include joint projects in exploration and production of oil and gas resources, cooperation in the sphere of forest industry, metallurgy, agriculture, medicine and biotechnology," Yakovenko emphasized.
On the international arena, both sides "intend to consult on a number of urgent problems, including the UN reform, the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab-Israeli settlement, and the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula," he said.
"Russia and Brunei are ready to establish cooperation not only on a bilateral level, but also in the framework of multilateral regional structures, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)," he underlined.
