CHISINAU, June 5 (RIA Novosti, Vladimir Novosadyuk) -- Moldova's Prosecutor General's office denies statements made by the lawyer of Valery Pasat, Moldova's ex-defense minister and former director of the republican Information and Security Service, the advisor to RAO UES CEO, indicating that his client's health is in critical condition.

"On Saturday, doctors examined Pasat in the presence of Moldova's interior ministry officials and told me that health condition is satisfactory," Moldova's first deputy prosecutor general Valery Gurbulya told RIA Novosti on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, Pasat's lawyer Georgy Amikhalakioae told RIA Novosti his client's health causes serious concern about his life. "Valery Pasat's health condition and the conditions of his detention cause serious concerns about the life of my client," the lawyer said.

In his turn, Valery Gurbulya announced, "the conditions of Pasat's custody are not worse, and even better than average conditions for other inmates."

Moldova's first deputy prosecutor general stated, "yesterday, Pasat was offered medical assistance, but refused to accept it."

"I also issued instructions to transfer Pasat to a hospital at the Penitentiary Department in case his health condition deteriorates drastically, but he refused to do so as well," first deputy prosecutor general said.

According to Valery Gurbulya, "a decision has been made to keep Pasat under constant monitoring by doctors from the hospital at the Moldova's interior ministry."

Pasat was arrested in Chisinau on March 11, 2005 on charges of exceeding the limitations his executive power, which led to a MIG-29 sales deal in 1997 when Passat occupied the post of Moldova's defense minister. The prosecution estimates the harm caused by this deal in the amount of $53 million. He is also charged with an illegal sales deal on Uragan multiple-launch rocket systems and ammunition for discounted prices. The prosecution estimates the material damages caused by this deal at $1.8 million.

The first hearing of the case has been scheduled for June 27.
