MOSCOW, June 5 (RIA Novosti) - RAO UES and its subsidiaries will take additional measures to ensure safety of Russia's energy complex, member of RAO UES Management Board Leonid Gozman told RIA Novosti on Saturday. "Reshuffling of the management is a small part of actions taken by RAO UES and its subsidiaries. As a result of new measures the safety of Russia's energy system will increase significantly," Gozman said.
Earlier, OAO Mosenergo Director General Arkady Yevstafyev and Deputy Director General for economic issues Vladislav Nazin sent in their resignations, member of RAO UES Management Board Andrei Trapeznikov told RIA Novosti.
"The reason for these resignations is a negative evaluation of the Mosenergo top management's work voiced by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the recent meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation," Trapeznikov said.
He reminded the journalists that the state has the controlling stake in the energy holding. "The President's evaluation is final for top management of RAO UES and its subsidiaries," Trapeznikov underlined.
Mosenergo Deputy Director General Vladimir Chistyakov has been appointed acting Director General.
During the meeting with members of the Security Council on Saturday, Vladimir Putin stated the recent increase in accidents in the sphere of electric power industry is a sign of obvious and systematic management problems.
"I call the Prime Minister's attention to the cynicism and obvious low level of professionalism on the part of Mosenergo's top management," the Russian President said.
An industrial accident on May 24 at the Chagino electric power sub-station in Moscow, a number of power stations experienced cascading power failures. Consumers of electric power in five administrative districts of Moscow and the Moscow, the Kaluga and the Tula regions were left without electricity.
Due to power outage, the train traffic on five lines of the Moscow Metro was interrupted. 43 trains blocked the tunnels. Two aerator stations and three water supply operating stations were left without electric power.
Overall, 11,706 buildings, including 8,715 apartment buildings, 117 kindergartens, 106 schools, three boarding schools and 31 medical facilities experienced power outage. Traffic on 656 municipal transport routes was stopped. The work of 159 phone exchanges was interrupted.
Huge traffic jams were caused by the failure in the work of traffic lights. More than 20,000 passengers had to be evacuated from various Metro stations. About 1,500 people were stuck in elevators.
Prosecutors filed a criminal case in connection with mass power outages.
