"Discount airlines are rare on the Russian market. Germanwings offering low prices will attract passengers who could not afford to travel by air. We shall thoroughly control its work," spokesman for the Russian Transportation Ministry Ivan Chiburun said on Friday.
Spokesman for the transport and communications department of the Moscow government Oleg Nikolsky said: "Many people could not afford flights and traveled by train. Now they can go to Berlin by air."
Germanwings regular one-way flights to Berlin will cost $100. Today the average price of a one-way ticket to Berlin is at least $200.
Germanwings CEO Andreas Bierwirth said that ticket prices were low because 94% of tickets were sold on the Internet.
Since June 20, Germanwings will fly from Moscow to Berlin three times a week. Flights to Cologne will begin since July 16, 2005, Bierwirth added.
