ASTANA, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed intelligence reports saying Chechen separatists had had a part in recent unrests in the Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan.

"Talibs and Chechen terrorists could have a part in those events. We are checking out into the reports and would like other countries with relevant information to contribute to the inquiry," Lavrov told a news conference in Astana, Kazakhstan's capital, following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries.

Lavrov said sharing information was essential for finding out how the attack had been prepared and conducted.

Lavrov recalled the United States' State Department had warned American nationals about possible terrorist attacks in Uzbekistan. "That is why I do not think Russia possesses some unique information," said the minister.

Lavrov urged the Uzbek government address socioeconomic problems facing the people. He said this would not allow radicals to use popular discontent while pursuing their goals.

Gunmen raided a prison and some government buildings in Andizhan, the fourth largest city in the east of Uzbekistan (Central Asia). The authorities reported 170 people had been killed in clashes with troops, while journalists and rights activists insist hundreds of people were killed.
