TEL AVIV, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Israel has somewhere between 100 and 200 nuclear bombs, including neutron and hydrogen weapons, former Israeli nuclear physicist Mordechay Vanunu, who had served 18 years in prison for divulging the country's nuclear secrets in 1986, claims.

An atomic bomb can kill 100,000 people. Meanwhile a hydrogen bomb can wipe out up to one million people, Mr. Vanunu said in his interview to the London-based Al-Wasat newspaper, which is an Al-Hayat supplement.

Mr. Vanunu, who was released this past April, has to abide by some really tough restrictions. He is expressly forbidden to leave Israel and to meet foreigners. Above all, Mordechay Vanunu is forbidden to discuss his previous work at the Dimona nuclear center with journalists.

The Israeli Supreme Court turned down Mr. Vanunu's request on lifting such restrictions two days ago. The court verdict, which was passed on the recommendation of secret services, has it that Mordechay Vanunu still remains a national-security risk.

Talking to Al-Wasat, Mr. Vanunu stressed that he will continue to campaign for the right to leave Israel and to advocate nuclear disarmament. "I'll organize an international conference in Cairo (with Israeli participation). That conference will discuss nuclear-disarmament issues," Mordechay Vanunu noted. Mr. Vanunu also voiced an intention to offer his services to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to lecture on the consequences of using nuclear weapons in Nazareth, Israel.

The Maariv newspaper quotes a police source as saying that the SHABAK security service is closely watching the activities of Vanunu, who lives inside an Anglican church in Jerusalem. Counter-espionage officers are collecting information in order to accuse Mordechay Vanunu of violating the above-mentioned restrictions, the newspaper goes on to say.
