MOSCOW, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Council of Muftis has called on the global community to take urgent measures to avert a humanitarian disaster in Iraq.

Targeted missile strikes, the destruction of a mosque in Fallujah, which left 40 worshippers dead, the ban on the publication of a Moslem newspaper, the infringement on civil liberties, such as the freedom of speech and press, the instigation of strife between the Sunni and the Shiite communities make the Iraqi population take "adequate actions" against U.S.-led Coalition forces, the Council of Muftis points out in a statement.

The Russian Moslem community feels grief and alarm as it hears the daily news about the missile bombing of residential neighborhoods in Iraqi cities and the killing of hundreds of Iraqi civilians, old and young. It is also deeply worried over the prospect of a violence spillover into neighboring countries, the statement reads.

It also says that the Russian Moslems pray for all the civilians who have fallen victim to the occupation of Iraq: both Iraqi citizens and foreign nationals on humanitarian missions.
