MOSCOW, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia stands for the further development of good-neighbourly relations with Lithuania, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said at the news conference in RIA Novosti.

"The removal of the Lithuanian President from the office is the internal affair of the Republic of Lithuania. As to Russo-Lithuanian relations, we stand for their further development," Alexander Yakovenko said answering the question concerning the possible consequences for Russia of President Paksas' ouster.

On Tuesday, April 6, the Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) removed President Rolandas Paksas from the office. The parliamentarians accepted all the three accusations against him: that he illegally arranged citizenship for a sponsor of his election campaign, Russian businessman Yury Borisov, that he did not ensure appropriate conditions for keeping state secrets and exceeded his authority.

The mid-term presidential elections in Lithuania have been planned for June 13. Paksas has already said that he intended to contend for the presidency again.
