MOSCOW, April 8, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Moscow is quite optimistic about specific prospects for solving the problem of Kaliningrad-region military transits (The Kaliningrad region is Russia's Baltic enclave).

Russia-EU discussions make it possible to voice hope to the effect that the sides will agree on this issue, which is seen as quite important by Russia, Alexander Yakovenko, who serves as the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesman told reporters at a RIA Novosti press conference here today.

Kaliningrad-region military transits were discussed by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and EU Commissioner Christopher Patten in Berlin, Mr. Yakovenko added. We are raising the issue of civil freight transits and military transits via Lithuanian territory, Mr. Yakovenko went on to say.

In Mr. Yakovenko's words, this issue will be discussed by the Russian Foreign Minister and the three top EU officials in Dublin next week.

We are raising this issue; and we hope it will be settled together with the passenger-transit issue, Mr. Yakovenko said in conclusion.
