MOSCOW, April 8, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - At present NATO is not discussing any possible assistance to coalition troops in Iraq, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has announced.

"NATO is not conducting any operations in Iraq, though its member states are represented in the country," he recalled, when speaking live at the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

For NATO to render assistance to the coalition forces in Iraq the UN Security Council should adopt a resolution on creating forces to ensure stability in the country, Scheffer said.

"I honestly believe that in the near future sovereignty in the country will be passed to Iraqi people," he added.
