MOSCOW, APRIL 7, 2004, RIA NOVOSTI - The Russian Auditing Chamber has undertaken a review of the results of the early '90s privatization campaign, with the aim being to gauge the government's financial gain, the chamber's chairman, Sergei Stepashin, said to a U.S. business delegation Wednesday.

In a press release circulated by the Auditing Chamber's press unit, Stepashin is quoted as saying that the review is aimed primarily at assessing the amount of revenue that the privatization campaign brought into the Treasury coffers. Another objective will be to detect gross law violations in the course of government property sell-offs.

Stepashin hailed the intention by large U.S. financial and industrial groups to set up a foundation for the support of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia.

The Auditing Chamber, which contributes to the government's efforts to shape a civilized market in Russia, will continue to assist in the improvement of the investment climate for domestic and foreign entrepreneurs, Stepashin promised.
