RUSSIA'S CHIEF PLANT QUARANTINE INSPECTOR HOSPITALISED WITH GRAVE INJURIES

MOSCOW, April 2, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Alexander Vasyutin, Russia's chief plant quarantine inspector, has been seriously wounded, reports the Interior Ministry's central criminal department.

"On Thursday, the police received a telephone message from clinical hospital No 7, which said Alexander Vasyutin, 42, had been hospitalised with an open cranio-cerebral trauma and multiple fractures," said a police official.

Mr. Vasyutin was attacked in the entrance of his home on Ul Ivana Babushkina. Attackers beat the victim with a baseball club and a metal tube, which were found on the scene. The criminals are being searched for.

"Mr. Vasyutin if feeling better. He has regained consciousness, and investigators are looking forward to his speaking out. The attack may be connected to Mr Vasyutin's professional activity," said the police.
