UN HIGH COMMISSIONER ARRIVES IN OSSETIA

VLADIKAVKAZ, April 1, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - On Thursday UN High Commissioner's representative on refugees in Russia Rochanokorn Kasidis arrived in North Ossetia (republic in Russia's south federal district) in order to work out concrete program of works on the provision of living standards for Georgian refugees.

On the same day he visited Voskhod village, built in the republic especially for refugees.

During the meeting with North Ossetian President Alexander Dzasokhov Mr. Kasidis noted that "in the course of the 25-year career in the UN structures he never saw such village for refugees, where about 50 houses are provided with gas, electricity and water." According to him, the village "is an ideal example of refugees' problems solution and represents a skilled adaptation to the new conditions of life." The main aim of the UN Commissariat in North Ossetia is to attract finances from state and non-government organizations of various countries in order to solve housing problems, which stand before 8,000 more refugee families from Georgia, Mr. Kasidis said.
