TB EPIDEMIC IN AFGHANISTAN

ISLAMABAD, March 20, 2004. (RIA Novosti). The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about TB growth in Afghanistan.

This year the number of TB infected Afghans amounts to 70,000 (65 per cent of them are women), Frontier Post quoted WHO representative Dr. Mezzabotta as saying.

Two women die of tuberculosis in Afghanistan each hour, Mezzabotta told journalists in Kabul.

This disease killed over 20,000 people in 2003 and this year this number will grow, he noted.

Dr. Mezabotta called on the world community to help Afghans overcome TB epidemic.
